Deb DP 3My name is Deb Della Piana and I truthfully can’t tell you if my first love is painting, photography or writing. I guess it just depends upon where my head is at any given time. People keep telling me that I have to let everyone know a little bit about myself. Since I find it difficult to write long, boring narratives about myself, this is how I’ll approach it:

Present Profession: Artist, writer, photographer, blogger, and self-proclaimed great cook.

Former Profession: International Marketing Services Manager at Millipore Corporation in Bedford, Massachusetts. I also held several other positions there in advertising, public relations, print production, account management and copy writing over a twenty-four-year period in the Laboratory Products, Laboratory Water Purification, Bio-pharmaceutical Processing, Semiconductor Processing and Clinical Diagnostics Divisions. The rule at Millipore was to never become too comfortable. It was continually reorganizing, which gave you great exposure to a lot of things. Life after Millipore? I ran my own advertising agency, New Wave Marketing & Public Relations before it crashed and burned in 2002.

I also spent nine years as a Barista at Starbucks Walkers Brook in Reading, Massachusetts.

Why Was Millipore Better: More challenge (and lots more money).

Why Was Starbucks Better: Free coffee…and you can walk the hell out the door and not have to take it with you. When you go on vacation, you go on vacation. Nobody calls you looking for the status of projects. You don’t have to check in with clients. And, best of all, there’s not a lot of corporate ass kissing at this level, something I have always found extremely distasteful.

Favorite Artists: Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Georgia O’Keefe, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh. (This list is not exhaustive; it’s where I choose to stop.)

Favorite Writers: I don’t read much fiction, but I do love Stephen King and Rita Mae Brown. I read a lot of political nonsense, so I’m particularly fond of Naomi Klein (The Shock Doctrine is a great book), Keith Olbermann, Charles Pierce (Idiot America is also a great book), David Swanson, and Amy Goodman (one of the last true journalists left in America), to name a few.

Favorite Color: Blue–in all hues.

Favorite Music: The Beatles, followed by The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers Band, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. (Not in any particular order after The Beatles. They are always No. 1 in my book.) Solo artists? My absolute favorite voice in the world is Linda Ronstadt, followed by Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Tracy Nelson, Guy Clark, to name a few. There are a whole bunch of others, by the way, but this could run three or four pages if I get carried away.

Things That Make Me Happy: Susan, her kids and my kids. Painting, writing, photography, the Red Sox, cooking and inventing my own recipes.

Things That Piss Me Off: The entire state of the nation and, in particular, the GOP (Goons on Parade). (Not that I think the Democrats are any big woo either.) You can check out my political blog at

Okay, I’m done. If there’s anything else you want to know, you can check out my Facebook page, follow me on Twitter or leave me an email at! If you want to see my original photography, check out my blog at Stop. Look. Shoot.
